Penn State Senior Year Project

System Modeling & Vibrational Analysis on a Pumping System
Jan. 2016 -
May 2016
The pumping system in a building at Penn State is not performing at its optimal level. Our team was tasked to establish a set of recommendations to restore the system. The project was split into 2 parts: System Modeling and Vibrational Analysis.
System Modeling - The entire piping system was modeled in Engineered Software Inc.'s Pipe-Flo to simulate the performance of the system. This makes it a convenient way to keep the system in check as well as to verify the system parameters.
Vibrational Analysis - The air handlers in the system were vibrating at dangerous levels according to the ISO IS 2372 standard, which indirectly lowers the piping system's overall efficiency. KCF Technologies' Vibration Sensor Nodes and Machine Condition Monitoring Software were used to record the vibration data and analyze the vibration signals respectfully. The software makes use of the Fast Fourier Transform to analyze the pump's vibration displacement, velocity and acceleration. This ensures a precise and accurate analysis.
